Miniature Pressure Transducers

Measurement Specialties’ miniature pressure sensors generally employ a fully active or half active Wheatstone Bridge consisting of either semiconductor strain gages, diffused, ion-implanted, thin film or epitaxial piezoresistive strain gages or metal foil strain gages. The strain gages are either bonded to a sensing member which is clamped along its circumference, on one or more surfaces, or atomically diffused, implanted or grown as part of the sensing member. In the case of a silicon diaphragm sensor, the integrated silicon chip itself is the sensing diaphragm. Other techniques such as employing a micro-machined diaphragm, MEM or a force collector may also be employed.

The pressure, force or acceleration causes a bending, flexing or shear in the sensing member that in turn creates strain in the strain gages. The strain is proportional to the applied input and as the strain gages are located in areas of both tensile and compressive strain produces a bridge imbalance. When a bridge excitation voltage is applied, the bridge imbalance produces a voltage change at the bridge output that is proportional to the physical input to the sensor.
